For their first ever concert in Paris, organized by Seboom and K-FM and held together with The Rose, CKJ’s team had the opporunity to meet the four girls of Marmello! Very excited to meet the French public for the very first time and to see how popular they are overseas, the 4-member band talked to us during an interview, when  they especially opened up about their musicians career up until now and also their various influences in their music.

So, who are Marmello who debuted with “PUPPET” a year and a half ago? Stay tuned to find out more about this unique conversation!

Hello, thank you for this interview! To start could you introduce yourselves?

Youna: Hello, I am the guitarist of Marmello, my name is Youna! Thanks (laugh)
Hyuna: I am Hyuna, the singer of Marmello. Nice to meet you!
Doeun: Hello, I play bass in the group, I am Doeun

Gaeun: Hello, my name is Gaeun, I play drums in Marmello, nice to meet you!

Since when do you all play music together?

Hyuna: We started to make music in high school. I first met Doeun (bass) and Youna (singer) we started playing together. After we left high school, we met Gaeun. We kept playing together and our career started.

Each one of you have one predilection instrument, but did you ever imagine playing another instrument on stage?

Youna: Ah, I’d like to sing! (laugh) During one show, we decided to change roles inside the group, and so I wanted to sing, but I don’t really know how to sing. (laugh) I’d like to learn to sing well!
Doeun: For me, I’d like to play drums.

Youna: Yes, it’s true she has a great sense of rhythm!
Hyuna: I would simply like to play piano, because I’m kind of talented.
Youna: She manages very well with the piano.
Doeun: Yes, she plays really well!
Gaeun: If I had to choose an instrument, it would be bass.
Hyuna: Oh, there is no longer a guitarist! (laugh) Guitar is too difficult… (laugh)

To be a Korean band entirely of women is not easy, what are your thoughts on that? Where do you find the strength to establish yourselves among all those men rock band?

Youna: For the time being, there are not a lot of woman band. To be a girl group is very hard. Even though we have a good feeling, we will keep practicing hard for the showcases and to reach our goals.
Hyuna: I’d love for more girl band!

What are your thoughts on the influence you could have on others about being women and musicians?

Hyuna: Most of the times, for people rock is very energetic, but a lot of them think that us Marmello will do something soft, while we also love doing energetic and strong songs! We want to give the strength to other women band!

What could you say to those other girl band that are scared to start a career?

Youna: I’d like to say that in the end, there is no reason to be scared, you just have to do it!
Doeun: Most of the time you only need to take pleasure in what you do.
Youna: We can also say that once they debuted, they can come to us, we will do something together! (laugh)
The key is not to ask question, you have to do it and go forward with it.

How do you manage the delimitation between idol and rock artist (independent)?

Doeun: For us, there is no difference between and idol and the other musicians like rock artist, in the end, we all do music.

Have you ever thought of becoming idols before becoming musicians?

Doeun: No, not at all.
Hyuna: I couldn’t have done it, I can’t dance! (laugh)

What are the artists that motivate you to do rock music?

Doeun: The Pretty Reckless!
Youna: And also Paramore! We are very inspired by women who sings on the rock scene and it is with those influences that we built the band.

Is there any foreign band that you would like to collaborate with?

Hyuna: There are so much! (laugh)
Youna: The band we just talked about, like Paramore. It would be amazing (laugh)

Where do you find your inspiration to write your songs?

Doeun: At first, we wrote our texts like romans or poetry, we thought a lot on it. Now, we base our texts on our daily life, the little stories of our everyday life.
Hyuna: Yes, for example, when we are bored.
Doeun: Yes, when we are bored, or the feeling we have when it’s hot. These are the feeling that inspire us.
Hyuna: We write what we feel.

Is there other music genre that inspire you?

Youna: Each of us likes a different type of music, thus I think that our different preferences inspire us and have an influence on us.

Do you have each one a genre you particularly like?

Youna:I liked blues for a long time and I think that to a certain degree, this genre has inspired me indirectly. Right now, I like and listen to EDM.
Hyuna: As I am a singer, I like R&B
Doeun: Hum, I like slow songs that we can hear is ballads, R&B or soul.
Gaeun: As I am a drummer, I like rock but also EDM and hip-hop.

It is your first show in France alongside The Rose, how do you dread the concert?

Doeun: We are so eager for this show! We can’t wait but we are also stressed out and anxious as it is our first time in France, we want to do our best!
Gaeun: It seems to be a dream that we have been having for a long time, but it finally comes true today.

Only a year ago, you said you wanted to come in France, you are here now to produce on stage, what are your expectations?

Youna: We still can’t believe it is happening! (laugh) It has been a long time since we wished to come in France, we are curious to see how many fans are going to be here and see the atmosphere. I think I would not be able to believe it until I see the public tomorrow! (laugh)
Gaeun: Until the last moment, we can’t really believe it. (laugh)
Hyuna: Ah, tomorrow, it’s going to be incredible!
Doeun: We can’t wait!

What are your thoughts on the love of the international fans?

Doeun:First, it is surprising and refreshing! We are grateful.
Youna: It’s the reason why we decided to learn English. (laugh)
Gaeun: We read sometimes comments where fans say “saranghaeyo” (I love you), but to see it with our own eyes is more impressive and touching. I’d like to talk to them but it is difficult as we can’t really talk in English very well.
CKJ: Fans of K-Pop know one or two words in Korean, so I think you will be surprised at the fan meeting tomorrow!

Did you expect to see French fans at the airport yesterday?

Hyuna: No! (laugh)
Doeun: We were so surprised! (laugh)
Youna : We were not ready, we weren’t clothed for this! (laugh)
Hyuna : But it was really touching, it was amazing.

You arrived yesterday, how did the travel go?

Youna: L’avion s’est très bien passé, c’est la première fois qu’on le prenait pour faire un si long voyage ! Le vol a duré 14 heures en tout.

Is a future show in France planned?

Hyuna: We would really love to have a show in France!
Doeun: We will come back if the opportunity comes up.

Is there any other European country you would absolutely want to play in?

Hyuna: For me, I want to play all around the world! Even though there is only one fan! (laugh)
Youna: Yes, even if there is one fan!

How do you picture your career continuing? More precisely internationally ?

Doeun: : For now, we don’t have any project programmed.
Youna : We don’t have any plan for the international scene, but we will work hard to have the possibility to play around the world!

Do you have any last word to give to your French fans?

Gaeun & Youna: Je t’aime ! (I love you)
Youna:Thank you a lot! (laugh)
Doeun: If you are coming to the show tomorrow, let’s have fun together. Give us your love, please..
Youna: : All together: on vous aime, on vous aime ! Je t’aime ! (we love you, I love you!))
Gaeun: Je t’aime! (I love you)
