Le 14 mars 2016, le groupe japonais CROSSFAITH passait par Paris pour un concert au Trabendo à l’occasion de leur tournée “XENO Europe Tour 2016“.
Seulement quelques heures avant le concert, nous avons pu nous entretenir avec le bassiste du groupe, Hiroki, pour une interview.

Pouvez-vous vous présenter pour commencer ?
Je m’appelle Hiroki, je suis bassiste et je crache du Jack Daniels sur la foule pendant le concert. Merci.
Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrés et comment le groupe s’est-il formé ?
C’était quand j’avais 17 ans, Ken et Teru ont formé un groupe car ils étaient amis depuis qu’ils avaient 18 ans et Tatsu était nouveau. Ken était le leader du club de musique au lycée lorsqu’il avait 17 ans et Tatsu était le nouvel élève donc Ken l’a intégré au groupe et ils ont débuté un groupe de métal ensemble. Je les ai vus quand j’avais 17 ans et ils étaient vraiment doués.
Vous connaissez le groupe Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas ? Le chanteur, Minami, est mon ami depuis qu’on a 12 ans et on a créé un groupe ensemble. C’était la première fois, nous avons commencé ensemble et je pense que nous nous en sortions bien. Après quelques mois le groupe s’est séparé. Il a rejoint Las Vegas et moi CROSSFAITH. C’est ainsi que j’ai débuté dans ce groupe.
Qu’est-ce qui fait votre force en tant que groupe ?
Nous ne savions pas grand chose lorsque nous avons créé CROSSFAITH, nous venions d’un petit coin à côté d’Osaka et vous savez… si vous grandissez à Tokyo il y a plein de clubs de musique. Mais nous étions plus du genre asocial qui écoutaient de la musique dans la minuscule chambre de Teru en fumant de l’herbe et en buvant ensemble tout en parlant des musiques qu’on aimait…nous étions juste des personnes asociales. Mais je pense que c’était bien car si nous avions eu plein d’amis cela aurait été fêtes sur fêtes et nous n’aurions pas privilégié la musique.
Si nous pensions à notre futur à cette époque, nous ne savons pas quoi penser et on se demandait « Qu’est-ce qu’on va faire ? »… Le Download Festival ! La scène principale du Download Festival ! Nous étions comme ça et nous avons réussi et je pense que nous avons fait beaucoup de choses.
Si vous deviez choisir une chanson à conseiller à quelqu’un qui ne connaît pas encore votre musique, laquelle ce serait ? Pourquoi ?
Parmi toutes nos chansons, je dirais “Photosphere“. Cette chanson a beaucoup de batterie et de basse et des parties intenses. Le premier album de CROSSFAITH était plus dans le genre métal mais maintenant le degré est différent.
Quelle chanson avez-vous le plus hâte de chanter ce soir ?
“Scarlett“. Nous n’avons pas joué cette chanson pendant cette tournée. Donc pour Paris… C’est un secret !
Ce n’est pas la première fois que vous venez en Europe. Quelles étaient vos attentes pour cette nouvelle tournée ?
J’en attends beaucoup pour içi parce que la première fois que nous avons joué içi, avec le groupe britannique Architect, c’était le chaos et nous étions surpris. Je veux revoir ça.
Votre dernier album XENO rassemble un mélange d’espoir, d’échec, d’amour, de trahison et de mort. En quoi cet album est-il si différent des précédents ?
C’est très différent, notre producteur est différent. Il n’est pas comme notre ancien producteur. Nous avons travaillé avec David Bendeth qui s’occupait de Paramore, Breaking Benjamin et Bring Me The Horizon mais il était très axé sur son côté producteur. Mais Josh est plutôt du genre à nous dire un matin « Les gars, les gars ! J’ai une nouvelle idée ! ». Il est du genre à nous faire faire un album dans une cave, où l’on ne voit pas où on va et nous dire « J’ai une idée et on pourra décider où on va ». Il nous a mis à l’aise et nous avons fait l’album par nous-mêmes, nous étions aussi appelés producteurs donc c’était agréable pour nous. C’était une grande différence par rapport à notre précédent album. La façon d’enregistrer était à l’opposé. Habituellement, le groupe commence à enregistrer avec la batterie. L’idée de Josh était de la mettre à la fin. Grâce à ça on pouvait faire des modifications, vous savez, si nous enregistrons la batterie en premier on ne peut pas changer l’accent. Mais si on l’enregistre en dernier, on peut faire des modifications à chaque fois que l’on a de nouvelles idées. C’était vraiment sympa !
Cette année vous fêtez vos 10 ans de carrière. Allez-vous faire quelque chose de particulier à cette occasion ?
Qu’est-ce que vous attendez ?
Nous ne savions pas que c’était nos 10 ans avant que vous m’en parliez. Donc nous n’y avons pas réfléchi. Quelque chose… Oui nous devrions faire quelque chose…
[Nous avons donné l’idée d’une nouvelle tournée, ou bien d’un album qui pourrait regrouper les chansons les plus représentatives de leur carrière.]
Quelle est la chose la plus étrange que vous ayez vu pendant une tournée ?
Il y en a eu beaucoup. Il y a deux ans, lorsque nous faisions une tournée au Royaume-Uni et en Europe. Et je pense que c’était au Royaume-Uni, nous voyagions dans le bus et nous avons fait un arrêt. Nous étions encore en ville. Teru a voulu faire pipi dans le village en hauteur mais il y avait des gens en dessous, et ils étaient tellement énervés. C’était très drôle !
Voulez-vous transmettre un message à vos ans français ?
Merci pour tout et pensez à écouter Xeno. Pendant cette tournée nous avons passé un bon moment en France. Nous avons déjà fait des tournées ici plus d’une fois mais cette fois… Je ne parle pas juste de la nourriture mais votre façon de manger est vraiment belle. Il y a « bon appétit » et « Merci », cela ne se résume pas à manger du fast-food.

On the 14th of March 2016, the Japanese band CROSSFAITH came to Paris for a concert at Le Trabendo, last date of their tour “XENO Europe Tour 2016“.
Only a few hours before the show, we had the opportunity to meet with the bassist of the band, Hiroki, for an interview.
It’s our first interview with you. Could you present yourself and the band?
This is Hiroki, I play bass and I spit Jack Daniels to the people of the show. Thank you.
How did you met each other and how did the band form then?
That was when I was seventeen. The singer Ken and the DJ Teru (Tamano Terufumi) formed a band with each other because they were friends since they were 18. And Tatsu (Amano Tatsuya) was new. Singer Ken was the leader of the music club in high school when he was seventeen and Tatsu was like the new student so Ken (Kenta Koie) brought Tatsu to the band and started metal band. I saw them when I was seventeen and they were really good.
Do you know the band called Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas? The singer, Minami, he’s my friend since we have twelve years old and we started a band. It was the first time, we started together and we were doing…I think we were doing well. After a few months, my band broke up. He joined Las Vegas and I joined CROSSFAITH. That’s how I started in the band.
As a group, what is it that makes your strength?
We didn’t know a lot when we started CROSSFAITH, we were from a local side of Osaka and… you know like if we grow up in Tokyo there is a lot of music club. But we were more nerds who were listening to music in Teru‘s really tiny room and you know like smoking weed and drinking together and showing’ this is my favorite new music recently’, like that… we were just nerds. But I think that was really good because if we have a lot of friends, and we are going out to party, party, party, we aren’t gonna be into music.
When we thought about our future at that time, we didn’t know and thought “What are we gonna do?”… Download Festival! Main stage of Download Festival! We were just like that and now we did it and I think we did a lot.
If you had to choose one of your songs for someone who doesn’t know your music yet, which one would it be? Why?
From all of our songs, I might say “Photosphere“. The song has a strong drum and bass and has hard parts. CROSSFAITH first album was more metal but now the percentage is different.
Which one of your songs are you the most excited to sing tonight?
“Scarlett“.We haven’t been playing it on this tour. So… for Paris… secret!
It’s not the first time that you are coming to Europe. What were your expectations for this new tour?
This time, I expect much because the first time we played here, with the group Architect from UK, that was chaos and we were surprised. I want to see it again.
Your last album XENO brings together a mix of hope, failure, love, betrayal and death. In what way is this album so different from the previous ones?
It’s really different, the producer is different. He’s not like our former producer. We worked with David Bendeth, he did Paramore, Breaking Benjamin and Bring Me The Horizon but he was like producer, producer like this is the right way. But Josh was like in the morning “Hey guys guys guys! I’ve got a new idea!” And he was more like making an album in a cave, we couldn’t see where we were going but he was like “I’ve got an idea and we can choose where we gonna go”. So he was more comfortable first and we made an album just by ourselves, we were called producer so it was comfortable for us. That was a big difference from the previous album. How we tracked was the opposite. Usually, the band start tracking from drums. Josh, his idea was “drum tracking last”. And then we could change, you know, if we track drum first you cannot change the accent. But if we track it last, we can change every time, every day, we brought new ideas. That was really good!
This year, you are celebrating your 10th anniversary as CROSSFAITH since you started your career in 2006. On this occasion, are going to do something special?
What do you expect?
We didn’t know it’s gonna be our 10th year until you guys told me. So we haven’t think about it. Something… Yeah we may do something…
What is the weirdest thing you’ve seen on tour?
There’s a lot. Two years ago, when we were touring in UK and Europe. And I think that was in UK, we were moving in the bus and we stopped. We were still like in the middle of the city. Teru went to pee on the village but there was people under there,and the guys were so mad. It was so funny!
Do you have a message for your French fans?
Thank you for everything and make sure to check Xeno. On this tour we had a really good time in France. We had tour here a lot of times but this time… I’m not just talking about food but how you guys are having food is really beautiful. There’s “Bon appétit” and “Merci”, not just like eating fast-food.
